Two sites, two commutes
Naval Base Ventura County is one installation with two main sites about ten miles apart. Port Hueneme is the Seabee and deep water port side. Point Mugu is the airfield and sea range side. No shuttle runs between them.
Know which side your command is on before you pick a house. It changes your gate, your drive and often your school district. Port Hueneme families usually look at Port Hueneme and Oxnard first. Point Mugu families usually start in Camarillo.
Rent, base housing or buy?
Base housing takes your whole BAH, and the waitlists are real. Renting a three bedroom here runs about $3,300 to $4,100 a month. A VA home loan lets you buy with zero down and no monthly mortgage insurance, so the same BAH can build equity instead of paying a landlord.

What is BAH at Naval Base Ventura County in 2026?
Port Hueneme and Point Mugu are both in the Ventura, CA Military Housing Area (CA025). For 2026, an E-5 with dependents gets $3,537 a month and an O-3 with dependents gets $4,212. The full table is on the BAH calculator page.
Where do military families live near NBVC?
Most stay close. Port Hueneme and Oxnard are 5 to 20 minutes from Knott Gate. Camarillo is the short drive to Point Mugu. Ventura, Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark and Simi Valley are longer drives. See all eight cities.
Can I buy a home before I arrive in Ventura County?
Yes. Many families go under contract from their old duty station. I tour homes with you on live video, and a spouse can often satisfy the VA occupancy rule if you are still in transit.
