The gates at Point Mugu
- Las Posas Gate (Gate 3), where Las Posas Road meets Highway 1, is open 24 hours.
- Mugu Road Gate (Gate 2), off Naval Air Road, keeps weekday hours, about 0600 to 1700.
Outside weekday hours everyone funnels through Las Posas, so swing shift and weekend duty mean one line. The visitor center is at 116 Mugu Road. Gate hours change, so confirm with the base.

Neighborhoods near the Point Mugu gate
Central Camarillo
About 15 to 25 minutes straight down Las Posas Road, no freeway involved. Pleasant Valley schools and suburban streets.
Mission Oaks and east Camarillo
Single family homes and townhomes, 20 to 30 minutes to the gate by Pleasant Valley Road or Lewis Road.
Camarillo Springs
A golf course community at the foot of the Conejo Grade, 20 to 30 minutes out. Ask about fire zone status and insurance early.
South Oxnard
The lowest single family prices of the close in options, with a flat 15 to 25 minute drive down Highway 1.
Port Hueneme
Condo country by the beach, 15 to 25 minutes by Hueneme Road. The commissary is here.
Newbury Park
Conejo Valley schools at the top of the grade, 25 to 40 minutes to the gate.

- Ocean View School District. K to 8 for Point Mugu base housing and parts of southeast Oxnard. Laguna Vista Elementary is a California Purple Star school.
- Pleasant Valley School District. K to 8 for Camarillo and Catalina Heights. It lets military families enroll before they arrive. Rancho Rosal Elementary is a Purple Star school.
- Adolfo Camarillo High and Rancho Campana High. Camarillo's high schools in the Oxnard Union High School District. Rancho Campana is an academy school with a lottery.
- Child care. The Child Development Center at Point Mugu is 805-989-3675. All waitlists run through MilitaryChildCare.com.

Restaurants and shopping
- Camarillo Premium Outlets. The big outlet center on the 101, about 20 minutes from the gate.
- Old Town Camarillo. Local restaurants and coffee along Ventura Boulevard.
- Point Mugu Navy Exchange. A smaller Exchange on base. The commissary is at Port Hueneme.
- Point Mugu State Park. Trails, beach camping and Mugu Rock, just south of the base on Highway 1.
- Point Mugu Missile Park. A free outdoor display of aircraft and missiles just outside the gate.
- Channel Islands Harbor. Waterfront dining and the boats to the islands, about 20 minutes away.

Things to check before you sign
- Aircraft noise. It is an active airfield. Visit on a weekday and ask about the base's noise contours.
- Flood and tsunami zones. The plain around the base is low. Look up any address on the state and FEMA maps.
- Farm traffic. Las Posas Road and Lewis Road are two lanes through working fields. Tractors are part of the commute.
