The gates at Port Hueneme
- Knott Gate on Ventura Road at Sunkist Street is open 24 hours. Old hands still call it Sunkist Gate.
- Victoria Gate and Pleasant Valley Road Gate keep weekday hours, about 0600 to 1700.
The commissary and the main Navy Exchange are on 23rd Avenue, a short drive in from Knott Gate. It is the only commissary for the whole installation, so Point Mugu families shop here too. Gate hours change, so confirm with the base before a late arrival.

Neighborhoods near the Port Hueneme gate
City of Port Hueneme
Five minutes from Knott Gate. Mostly condos and townhomes from the 1970s and 1980s, plus a smaller supply of single family homes. The beach complexes carry higher HOA dues that often include water and insurance.
South Oxnard
Single family homes on flat streets, 10 to 15 minutes to Knott Gate and an easy drive down Highway 1 to Point Mugu. A common pick for dual military couples.
Channel Islands Harbor and Oxnard Shores
By the water, between the harbor and the beach. Houses run high, condos much lower. Check the tsunami and flood maps for any address here.
RiverPark and north Oxnard
Newer homes, townhomes and condos by the 101, 15 to 20 minutes to the gate. RiverPark carries a Mello-Roos special tax, so ask for the tax bill.

- Hueneme Elementary School District. Kindergarten through 8th grade for the City of Port Hueneme, base housing and parts of south Oxnard. Office 805-488-3588.
- Oxnard School District and Rio School District. K to 8 for most of Oxnard north of Channel Islands Boulevard. RiverPark is in Rio.
- Hueneme High and Channel Islands High. The closest high schools, in the Oxnard Union High School District. Hueneme High has a Navy JROTC unit.
- Child care. The Child Development Center at Port Hueneme is 805-982-4663. Sign up at MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders.

Restaurants and shopping
- Navy Exchange and commissary. 23rd Avenue, inside Knott Gate. Fill the fridge your first night here.
- Channel Islands Harbor. Waterfront restaurants, a Sunday farmers market and kayak rentals, about 10 minutes from the gate.
- Hueneme Beach Park and pier. A 1,250 foot pier, barbecue pits and the sand, five minutes from Knott Gate.
- The Collection at RiverPark. The big outdoor center by the 101 with shops, restaurants and a movie theater.
- Downtown Oxnard and Heritage Square. Taquerias, local spots and restored Victorian homes with summer concerts.
- U.S. Navy Seabee Museum. Free, outside the fence next to Knott Gate. Start here if you are joining a battalion.
