PCS Timeline Checklist for Naval Base Ventura County

Orders in hand? Here is the timeline I give every family heading to Naval Base Ventura County. Want it as a printable PDF with every phone number on one page? Grab the free checklist.

The day orders drop

  • Call the NBVC Housing Service Center at 805-982-4321. Ask about wait times for your rank and family size, and get on the list.
  • Ask your gaining command for a sponsor.
  • Sign up at MilitaryChildCare.com if you need child care. Waitlists here can run months.
  • Figure out which site your command is on, Port Hueneme or Point Mugu. It changes everything about where to live.

90 days out

  • Decide between base housing, renting and buying. Run your numbers on the BAH calculator.
  • Book your household goods move. Summer dates go first.
  • Request school and shot records. Your address decides the district here, so read up on the cities before you pick a house.
  • If you own firearms, read California's rules now. Some items cannot come with you.

60 days out

  • Plan a house hunting trip, or tour by live video if you cannot get away. I do video tours for families still at their old duty station.
  • Start school enrollment paperwork. California lets military families enroll before they arrive.
  • Budget the move, including deposits, HOA dues and furniture.

30 days out

  • Reserve lodging. The Navy Lodge at Port Hueneme is 805-985-2624.
  • Ask about advance dislocation allowance if you need cash up front.
  • Start one folder for every receipt. Your travel claim depends on it.
  • Check your registration and insurance. California's minimum liability coverage is 30/60/15.
  • Refill prescriptions so you have 30 days on hand.

Arrival week

  • Use Knott Gate at Port Hueneme or the Las Posas Gate at Point Mugu. Both are open 24 hours.
  • Check in with your command.
  • Update DEERS with your new address.
  • Stock up at the commissary on 23rd Avenue at Port Hueneme. It is the only one on the installation.
  • Move your TRICARE enrollment to the West Region.

The first 30 days

  • Close on your home or sign your lease.
  • File your travel claim early. Late claims delay your money.
  • Handle the car: registration, plates and smog if you register here.
  • Walk the beach at Port Hueneme. You live here now.

Where I fit in

The hardest part of this timeline is the house. I help you line up homes that fit your gate and your BAH, tour them with you on video and time the closing around your report date. Tell me your report date and I will build the plan backward from it.
